As the new digital and networked technologies become ever more ubiquitous, learning anywhere and anytime is fast becoming a lifestyle and the ideal of education for all is increasingly within reach. Open education is the new call of the times, and it is being taken up by both learners and educators alike.
While some universities are making significant contributions to open education, others are confronting the challenges that it poses, for example in terms of admissions, assessment and accreditation, curriculum and learning resources, and teaching and learning modalities.
ICODeL2014 brings together academics, teachers, researchers, university and school administrators, policymakers, trainers, students, and other education stakeholders in government, industry, and other professional sectors to share experiences in open education initiatives, and critical reflections on how universities can lead the way towards achieving “a world of open, flexible and effective education for all” (The Cape Town Open Education Declaration).
