The PASCAL Centre for Africa proudly presents the “Trends2017” Conference that will take place from 17 to 19 October 2017 at the Skukuza Conference Centre in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Since the inauguration of the PASCAL network we are delighted to host the event in South Africa for the first time.

We would like you to participate in this astonishing event. In organising the conference at such a location we are connecting with the old and modern African tradition of the bush council. In the French part of Africa we have the “”l’arbre à palabre”, the tree of council and dialogue where the elders discuss what life is throwing at the community and what can be done. In southern Africa the tradition, as well as the modern practice, is to retire to a peaceful place away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and organise strategic councils in the form of consultation and dialogue. It is called Kgotla or Lekgotla in Botswana and South Africa, a Sesotho word, meaning court or community council where everybody speaks their piece to enlighten the elders and where strategic decisions are made. The use of an ancient African tradition and the location will prove to be a very specific experience which will rarely be encountered elsewhere.
