This first international conference on abortion to be held in Canada is making history and we are delighted with the depth and breadth of the abstracts from around the world. Clearly we lit a spark with the large quantity of excellent evocative proposals. On behalf of the organizing committee for Abortion: The Unfinished Revolution, we invite you to join us in Charlottetown in August 2014 for this historic conference.
Renowned historian and author, Rickie Solinger will give the key note address at the conference banquet: “What makes “reproductive justice” different from “reproductive rights”? Her books include: Wake Up Little Susie: Single Pregnancy and Race before Roe v. Wade, The Abortionist: A Woman against the Law, Beggars and Choosers: How the Politics of Choice Shapes Adoption, Abortion, and Welfare in the United States, and Pregnancy and Power: A Short History of Reproductive Politics in America. Her keynote is sure to create and inspire lively conversations.
Marlene Gerber Fried, eminent Professor of Philosophy and Faculty Director, Civil Liberties and Public Policy Program at Hampshire College, will close the conference with a focus on the rise of activism to defend women's rights for reproductive control and inspiration in our work for a better tomorrow: "Abortion Rights Activism And Reproductive Justice." Known nationally and internationally as a leader in the reproductive rights movement, she is coauthor of Undivided Rights: Women of Color Organize for Reproductive Justice, which was awarded the 2004 Outstanding Book Award by the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights. She edited the collection From Abortion Rights to Reproductive Freedom: Transforming a Movement. She was the founding president and continues to serve on the board of the National Network of Abortion Funds and she serves on the board of the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights.
Packed in between these inspirational leaders are two days of scholarship, learning, and celebrations of women's power to change the world to achieve reproductive justice. Presentations from around the globe highlight the work that remains for us in creating the space for women to access safe abortions and the opportunities to share knowledge about reproductive justice. Balanced with these are evocative art action/resistance presentations to inspire us in our movements. Recognizing the unfinished revolution, this conference aims to bring some of the most important issues remaining for women's reproductive justice, especially access to safe abortion, to the forefront for discussion, reflection and action. Opportunities to network will add to our resistance animation in our communities, nations, and globally.
